Smelling notes by Jake Perks
Turning to page 58: “South-Western Asia and The Nile Valley”. It smells like an ancient rustic cottage tucked away in the Lake District that hasn’t had human contact in a very long time, with the exception of its elderly resident. The longer I smell it I get images of forests and lakes, mid winter with a fog in the air. The smell is so distinct and specific, I get memories of exactly those times when I travelled to the Lake District as a child with my family. We would often stay at just such cottages, which would often have many old things and decor; things that I wouldn’t often see or come across in the city as everything was usually modern.
